The CRNM will be your ID in Brazil and it is required by the Federal Police for anyone staying in the country for more than 90 days. This document is really important, for you will need it to resolve many bureaucracies such as creating a brazilian bank account.
IMPORTANT: It’s not mandatory to have a CPF number to do this procedure. However, it is highly recommended to include this information in your dossier in order to have it on your CRNM, because you’ll need this number frequently and it is more practical to show your Policia Federal’s card than the email containing it. If you don’t have one yet, click on this LINK to see a step-by-step solution for the procedure.
STEP 1: Gather all the required document
In order to start the process to obtain the CRNM, you need to gather the documents listed in this page. Be sure to have all of them before starting the process. You can also find those documents listed below:
- This requirement form filled
- A 3×4 photo (colored, white background, flat paper) that might be asked if the system is not working in your appointment day
- A declaration of your personal information, such as your email, and a copy of your residency proof if you have one (you can find a document you can fill in here)
- A valid traveling document or other document that proofs your identity and nationality, in the terms of the treaties the country is a part of
- Original visa form
- The CRNM tax’s payment receipt (to pay this tax you’ll need to access and fill in this form, informing the “Codigo Receita STN” 140120 and the “Valor Total” R$ 204,77)
This list aims to help you in understanding what documents you’re going to need for this process, but it is imperative that you check in the document’s list in the government’s website in order to be sure you have everything.
STEP 2: Fill in the form
Once you have all the documents needed, fill in the form according to your situation. You can either click directly on the “Iniciar” button on the website or click on this link.
STEP 3: Picking a date
Once you have filled the form you’ll be able to pick a date to go to the Policia Federal’s unit that is defined by where you live. In this space you’ll be able to choose or change a date, check the chosen date and also cancel your appointment. You’ll need the solicitation number and your birth date to access it and you should pick “Migração” at the “Selecione o serviço desejado” space.
STEP 4: Go to the Policia Federal’s unit at the chosen date
You should go in person to the Policia Federal’s unit that is responsible for the immigration in your region (I imagine it will be indicated in the space you’ll access in the second step). This should take around 30 minutes.
STEP 5: Receiving your document (Carteira de Registro Nacional Migratório)
Your Carteira de Registro Nacional Migratório will be delivered to you in the Policia Federal’s unit where you have gone to at the previous steps (not 100% sure, you should check when you go there at the step 3).
It is necessary to check online if the document is ready or not. When it it ready you’ll see the message “Seu documento foi confeccionado e está pronto para ser retirado” and you’ll be able to fill a specific form that is needed to obtain your document.
Fill the form and pick a date to go get your document at the right Policia Federal’s unit. Some units don’t ask for an appointment, in this case the system will inform you that “não há agenda para o serviço escolhido”.
